Like many folks, I am a big fan of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, the 19th century "Prince of Preachers" in London. Funny story...when I was going through preparation for a very rigorous verbal examination for ordination, someone told me "Don't quote anyone but Calvin, Luther or Spurgeon."
As a fan of Spurgeon, I have also long been a fan of his devotionals "Morning by Morning" and "Evening by Evening." Of late these have often been put together, as a single volume or on various web sites as "Morning and Evening." These devotionals are, as they sound, to be used for morning devotional and evening devotional. I will leave it to you to figure out which one is which.
In 2007 Crossway Books, publishers of the English Standard Version of the Bible, published a version of these devotionals using the ESV with the commentary and exhortation having been updated by Alistair Begg. Begg has done a wonderful job of bringing the language into a more contemporary usage, without making it sound like some feeble attempt to be "cool." Spurgeon is cool enough anyway. Begg very much succeeded in making the language more accessible to a broader range of readers. The two small volumes are delightfully bound in a soft, leatheresque cover and are very small, fitting well in an assortment of bags or other places.
You can find "Morning by Morning" here and "Evening by Evening" here. My advice is that you check out these volumes as soon as you can. An old classic now reaches a new audience, and one that needs it badly.
